Heli-Hiking Information and Tips
Heli-Hiking Area Information:
- Mt. Charles Stewart is a long ridge that parallels the Bow Valley to the northeast of Canmore.
- Latitude: 51° 9' 20'' North
- Longitude: 115° 20' 3'' West
- Elevation: 2561 meters
All hiking is off-trails and extreme care is taken to prevent creation of trails.
Heli-hiking is only available once ground cover is dry and able to withstand foot traffic (usually from mid-June to late September). Wildlife such as bighorn sheep, pika and marmots are common.
What to wear and bring:
No special equipment is needed! We can provide you with the use of boots (size 6-13), jackets, daypacks and hiking poles.
Recommend items to wear/bring: T-shirt, long sleeves, warm jacket or sweater, rain jacket and pants, sunscreen, ball cap, bottled water and camera!
FAQs:
Q: What time do I need to be at the heliport?
A: You need to be at Alpine Helicopters 1 hour prior to your flight time for a safety video, waiver and briefing with your hiking guide.
Q: How many people can go on a heli-hike at a time?
A: Our guide to client ratio is 1:11. We can take up to 22 people at a time.
Q: Do I need to be an experienced hiker?
A: No. We provide 3 different levels of hiking/walking difficulty.
Q: If the weather turns bad and it is not possible to fly, what alternatives do we have?
A: White Mountain Adventures and Alpine Helicopters reserves the right to cancel any heli-hiking for safety or weather related reasons. We will arrange a guided hike at a different location and adjust pricing accordingly.
Cancellation Policy:
- Bookings cancelled up to 48 hours prior to a trip date will not be charged.
- Bookings cancelled less than 48 hours prior will be charged full amount unless White Mountain Adventures or Alpine Helicopters decides to cancel due to weather and/or trail conditions.
